Cold sores, also known as fever blisters, are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV-1). Cold sores are highly contagious and typically appear around the lips or mouth. Symptoms include tingling, itching, and blisters. Antiviral medications can reduce the severity and duration of cold sores outbreaks. Prevention includes avoiding direct contact.
