Pericarditis is the inflammation of the pericardium, the thin sac-like membrane surrounding the heart. Causes of pericarditis include infections, autoimmune diseases, and heart attacks. Symptoms include sharp chest pain, fever, and shortness of breath. Diagnosis often involves echocardiograms and blood tests. Treatment may include anti-inflammatory medications and addressing underlying causes.
