Kelly Lai Cheong

As a young graduate from the University of Queensland, I started my career in Aged care where I gained valuable skills treating a variety of neurological conditions. I then stepped with a leap of faith into private practice- a unique opportunity that was given to me to work with Australia’s leading provider of physiotherapy and allied health services. My time within the company gave me exceptional experiences, both in musculoskeletal based physiotherapy and sports injuries. With the team, we worked closely with adolescents from Maribynong Sports Academy. I am trained and qualified with APPI and Polestar education for Mat and Reformer Pilates. My enthusiasm for new life challenges led me to make the big move from Australia to the UK. I am hoping to continue helping people feel better and live better.

With a passion for helping others, my physiotherapy journey began at Mosvold Hospital in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. Here I rotated between diverse wards, conducted outreach visits, and led community-wide educational programs. Following that, I transitioned to working in a Cardiac ICU at a Private Hospital in Cape Town. Here, I specialised in cardiac post-surgery, respiratory, orthopaedic and neurological cases. I then moved to London where I developed a passion for musculoskeletal physiotherapy. I gained experience in sports injuries, chronic and acute injuries and multiple orthopaedic conditions. I also worked with multiple rugby clubs and school teams where I developed a special interest in adolescent injuries.

I’ve looked after everyone and the select few. I’ve looked after patients off the streets and on multi-million pound yachts, I’ve treated everyone from school kids to prime ministers. I’ve assisted pitch side to trading desk. I’ve helped from the crack of dawn to the last man standing. My job ain’t done yet….

Gary started his athletics career when he strained the ligaments around his knee during a competitive football match. Due to this injury he required Physiotherapy rehabilitation. He joined an athletics group as a way to help with his technique and to rehabilitate his leg. Gary has been involved in Athletics for the past 25 years in a competitive and coaching capacity. Gary is a level 3 athletics coach, Personal trainer, and a sports massage therapist. Gary presently coaches a squad of junior and senior athletes who he has coached to national standard, as well as some area champions.

I’ve spent a majority of my career working for the NHS where I completed my junior core rotations and moved into a role as a specialist physiotherapist in hand therapy. Here I discovered my love for treating hand conditions including acute trauma, surgical and long term conditions. Hand therapy is a niche area, and generally people don’t know much about it until they have hand injury or hand pain which prevents them doing hobbies, sports and general daily activities. I am a Registered Practitioner with BAPAM, enabling me to assist Performing Arts professionals in getting back to what they do best.

At Edenvale Hospital in South Africa, I gained valuable experience treating long-term rehabilitation patients with neurological conditions. My work also involved treating patients with musculoskeletal, paediatric, and orthopaedic conditions. Seeking a new challenge, I made the jump into private practice, where I developed a passion for working with musculoskeletal patients. In addition to this area, I have experience in paediatric physiotherapy, including post-operative care for children with cerebral palsy and other neurological conditions. I have also assisted with various running races held in South Africa, including the Comrades Marathon.

After qualifying in 2007 I travelled to Ghana to work as a physiotherapist within a local hospital and to work with the local football academy. After completing my junior rotations, and travelling the world I specialised in musculoskeletal physiotherapy, based in North London. Since starting work with Six Physio, I have gained an incredible amount of experience specialising in Rehab, Pilates, running re-training and correcting movement dysfunctions. I have been lucky enough to share my knowledge with others: writing many articles for running and triathlon magazines, plus teaching numerous Physio academies to other physiotherapists, and sharing expertise in movement dysfunctions, running rehabilitation and ski rehab. I have has completed the APPI clinical Pilates matwork course and love teaching regular Pilates classes.
